3 Essentials Tips To Build Your Personal Brand
Even though, compared to other topics, Personal Branding is still the new kid on the block, you can already find a lot of information online on how to build your personal brand.
Some of this is helpful, some, not so much.
In this vast sea of information, it's easy to become overwhelmed and, of course, you can't spend your day skimming through countless articles and social media posts to find what you are looking for.
In my video below, I summarise what I consider the essentials to build your personal brand.
Tip 1: DEFINE YOUR BRAND
For as long as I work in personal branding, I will repeat this over and over again:
you can't build your personal brand if you don't even know what your personal brand is about.
Defining your personal brand means knowing who you are, what makes you valuable and different, and what kind of image and reputation you want to build for yourself.
The key element here is specificity.
For example, let's say that you know you have an outgoing personality and that communication is one your strengths - that's great - but it's still generic. How does your outgoing personality influence people around you? And what specific communication skills do you excel at that make you the right person for the job?

Tip 2: COMMUNICATE INTENTIONALLY
This is about becoming more intentional and strategic in the communication of your personal brand. It's about understanding who and where your audience are, what communication channels work for you and how you can best translate your personal brand into your written, verbal and visual communication.
For example, let's say that you want to connect with more people in your industry, online. Where are they? LinkedIn? Instagram? A specific Facebook group for professionals in your field? Or let's say that you are not comfortable at big events. In that case, you may want to focus on smaller networking opportunities where you have the chance to get to know people better.
Tip 3: STAY CONSISTENT
Consistency is one of the most important and possibly one of the most challenging aspects of building your personal brand.
There are 2 elements to this:
How consistent your personal brand is in all your communication. For example, if you have a vibrant and fun personality but your personal style or your written communication is very serious, you are sending mixed messages and that confuses people.
How consistent you are in making your personal brand visible to your specific audience. This doesn't mean that you need to be in people's faces all the time, but you still need to be visible to people you want to connect and work with, especially if you work internationally or you have an online business and you mostly rely on online communication.
Knowing these tips alone, though, won't take you far unless you put them into practise. What actions you are going to take, to apply these essential tips to build your personal brand?
